I love my name

My name is Alex.

Well, it's short for Alexander, but I've always gone by Alex.

As a man, I like being called Al. Lots of really cool guys are called Al. Al Sharpton, Al Bundy, Al Jarreau, Al Green, Al Pacino. If you ever run into a guy called Big Al, you know he's probably wearing a Hawaiian shirt and is generally a barrel of monkeys.

Not as many cool Alexes or Alexanders. Alexander is too many syllables, and I always felt like Alex was still somehow too hard to say. Plenty of Alans and Alecs on my Starbucks cups (if I ever actually went to Starbucks).

But the real reason I love my name Alex more and more lately is that it's gender-agnostic.

I've observed that many non-binary people choose new names for themselves that are as gender neutral as possible. In some cases, names that aren't even traditional baby names. I feel like I wouldn't have to do that - I could just still be Alex.

And for women, Alex is a really sexy name. My only concern is that I'm not sure I would be able to do it justice as a woman. Still, I'm automatically in love with any woman named Alex and if I were a woman I'd love to be called Alex.

Huge bonus points for the fact that no matter what my gender identity is, or how I choose to present it (or not present it), I can still just be Alex, and not have to impose any difficulty on myself or any of the people that know me.

I love my name.
