Vivid Memories #8

It's 2001, I'm in the 12th grade and it's my favorite holiday: Halloween. Some of my high school friends thought that it would be fun to go trick-or-treating one last time as 16-17 year olds, so by 7PM we were in crappy rushed costumes walking around my friend's neighborhood asking people for candy.

At one of the first houses we went to, we were greeted by this white girl who was a little older than us (probably a college student), and she was a real see-you-next-tuesday if you know what I mean; saying stuff like "aren't you a little old to be trick-or-treating?" as she reluctantly gave us candy.

As we finished making the rounds of the neighborhood, we were passing by her house again and talking about how mean she was to us, when someone mentioned that it would be funny if I rang her bell again and asked her out. I was all about dopey stunts back then (and occasionally still am today), so I found myself ringing her doorbell again.

Me: Hi, remember me? I was here earlier.

Her: What do you want?

Me: Will you go out with me?

Her: No.

Me: Well, can I at least have some more candy?

Her: *sigh* fine...

What I like most about this memory (aside from the nice little value bet on the river that she paid me off on) is that, even though it wasn't a serious request, it was the only time I'd ever been straight up told "no" when it came to asking a girl out - every other time has either been a flake or came with an elaborate blow-softening excuse.
